Women In Film and Television Actors Mentorship
For the past six months I had the privilege to be a part of 2018's Women In Film and Television Actors Mentorship program. My mentor was the wonderful Crystal Lowe who was so generous with her time and advice. She provided me with such great insight into the professional actors world. With Crystal's guidance I worked towards connecting my mind with my body through various breath and vocal classes with David Smukler and Caroline Cave. I honed my listening skills with improvisational classes with Ali Froggatt. I practiced my on-camera auditions with Jeb Beach and Associates and I began to sink into my actors life. The organizer of this mentorship program is the wonderful Krista Magnusson who also had the foresight to introduce us to Aaron Hutchinson and his Actors Business Collective. These classes provided an invaluable amount of information that really made me evaluate and think about what it is I really want to accomplish. The other fantastic benefit to this mentorship were the other eleven women in the program whom I saw at least once a month during our scheduled volunteer slot at the Vancouver Greater Area Food Bank. This was a very enlightening time to share our experiences and count our blessings. Six months went by faster than I thought it would. When you are caught up in the middle of such an immersive career development program it can be tough to see all the growth that has happened. I went into the program with an application goal of wanting to be seen as an actor and not only a stunt actor. I ended the program with embracing the unique qualities I have within. I am an actor who is able to perform her own action to the degree of a stunt professional. Although this mentorship is meant to be an actors program it opened many doors and possiblities for me into creating my own work. I submitted my first Storyhive pitch and went to my first producers panel and even pitched a movie idea at the Women in Film Festival. I have realized throughout these six months that people surprise you and are more receptive to listening and helping you accomplish things than you might think. This mentorship and all those involved that made it happen, I wholeheartedly thank you. Not only did I benefit as an actor but as a person. I have a stronger sense of community and a truer sense of self that will make it all the more enjoyable creating and performing.
